On May 9, students of Vancouver Film School’s Makeup Design for Film & Television program had the opportunity to learn from one of the entertainment industry’s most accomplished makeup artists when Oscar-nominated makeup designer Donald Mowat visited our campus for a special presentation and Q&A session.
Known for his work on major productions including Dune, Blade Runner 2049, Sicario, and the James Bond films Skyfall and Spectre, Donald shared stories from his career, discussed the creative and technical challenges behind blockbuster productions, and offered honest advice for aspiring artists entering the industry.
Students also had the opportunity to ask questions directly and gain insight into the realities of working in production makeup from someone operating at the highest level of the industry. “It was an honour for me to learn some of the industry’s secrets from such a talented artist,” shared one Ӱֱ student.
A CAREER SPANNING HOLLYWOOD’S BIGGEST PRODUCTIONS
Over the course of his production makeup career, Donald Mowat has built an extraordinary body of work spanning film and television. His makeup credits include acclaimed productions such as Dune, Blade Runner 2049, Tron: Ares, 8 Mile, The Fighter, and Nightmare Alley, along with his work as Daniel Craig’s personal makeup artist on multiple James Bond films.
His work on Dune earned him Academy Award and BAFTA nominations for Best Makeup and Hairstyling, adding to a long list of accolades that includes Emmy, Gemini, Saturn, and Canadian Screen Award recognition throughout his career.
