2D animation creates movement with artwork that is designed and controlled primarily in two dimensions. That can mean drawing a character in a series of changing poses, but it doesn鈥檛 have to. A character can also be built from reusable pieces that an animator poses with a digital rig. Plenty of productions mix the two approaches.
This is where the term 2D can cause confusion. It tells you something about how the artwork is represented, but not exactly how an animator made it move. A hand-drawn sequence, a digitally rigged character and a shot combining both can all be examples of 2D animation.

What Makes Animation 2D?
The artwork may be two-dimensional, but the scene doesn鈥檛 have to look flat. Picture a character walking away from the viewer down a street. The character gets smaller. Buildings narrow toward the horizon. A foreground sign briefly blocks the character from view.
The artist can use perspective, scale and overlap to depict space without building that character or street as three-dimensional geometry. This is why saying that 2D animation simply has 鈥渘o depth鈥 isn鈥檛 particularly helpful. A 2D image can depict a convincing sense of depth while remaining two-dimensional artwork.
The more useful distinction is between depicted depth and geometry that actually exists in a three-dimensional digital scene.
Do 2D Animators Have to Draw Every Frame?
Not necessarily. If you鈥檙e drawing an action frame by frame, different drawings create much of the change the viewer sees. Even then, one drawing can sometimes remain visible for more than one displayed frame.
Rigged 2D works differently. Artwork is prepared so an animator can move or deform parts that already exist鈥攁 head, arm, hand, torso or whatever else the character setup requires.
The two approaches can also meet in the middle. An animator might use a rig for much of a character and create a new drawing when a particular hand pose, expression or effect falls outside what that setup handles well.
So whether an animator has to 鈥渄raw everything again鈥 depends on how the movement is being produced.
Frame-by-Frame, Rigged and Hybrid 2D Animation
Frame-by-frame animation gives an artist considerable freedom to change the artwork itself. A head can change shape during a fast turn. A hand can take on a completely different silhouette. The animator can push a pose and then change the character鈥檚 shape again in the next drawing.
A rig approaches movement differently. Instead of replacing most of the artwork, the animator works with visual elements that have already been prepared for posing and deformation. That reuse can be useful, but the existing artwork and controls also influence what can be done easily. When a pose falls outside those limits, new or modified artwork may be introduced.
So frame-by-frame and rigged animation are useful distinctions, but they aren鈥檛 rigid camps. A single production can use both.

Neither method automatically determines which software an animator should use. Different tools emphasize different combinations of drawing, rigging and compositing, so it usually makes more sense to understand the workflow you want before choosing the software.
What Are Key Poses, Breakdowns and In-Betweens?
Draw a character crouched on the floor. Now draw the same character at the top of a jump. You have two important positions, but you don鈥檛 yet have a complete performance. What happens between them?
The character could launch straight upward. The head could lead the action. The torso could stretch during takeoff. The character could lean forward and travel across the screen instead of jumping vertically.
The important storytelling or action positions can serve as key poses. A breakdown helps describe how the action travels between them. Further in-betweens provide additional intermediate visual information.
Simply adding more drawings doesn鈥檛 automatically produce better movement. What happens between the key poses helps determine how the action feels.
Traditional, Digital and 2D Don鈥檛 Mean the Same Thing
A digitally drawn sequence can be 2D, hand-drawn and digital at the same time. A rigged character can be 2D, rigged and digital. Those labels aren鈥檛 competing for the same slot. They describe different things about the production.

Traditional hand-drawn animation is an important form of 2D animation, but the terms aren鈥檛 synonyms.
Historically, hand-drawn production could involve artwork transferred to transparent cels and photographed. Digital tools changed that production environment without making frame-by-frame 2D cease to be 2D.
Do You Need to Be Good at Drawing for 2D Animation?
If you want to animate characters by drawing them frame by frame, drawing is part of the job. You have to create changing poses and shapes, so skills such as gesture, observation, proportion and spatial consistency matter.
A rig changes the equation. Because more existing artwork can be reused, you may spend less of the animation process creating entirely new drawings. You still have visual decisions to make: where the character鈥檚 weight sits, whether the silhouette reads, how far an arm moves or whether an expression communicates what the shot needs.
So someone asking, 鈥淗ow good do I need to be at drawing?鈥 first needs to know what kind of 2D work they鈥檙e aiming for.
2D Animation is Not One Visual Style
鈥2D鈥 doesn鈥檛 mean 鈥渃artoon-looking.鈥 A 2D production can be graphic, highly rendered, minimal, exaggerated or relatively naturalistic. It can use hand-drawn artwork, vectors, reusable assets or combinations of techniques.
The term tells you something about how the visual material is represented, not what the finished artwork must look like. That鈥檚 also why 2D, anime, cartoon, hand-drawn and vector animation aren鈥檛 interchangeable labels.
2D Animation vs. Motion Graphics
2D animation and motion graphics can overlap. Motion graphics often uses movement to communicate through typography, shapes, icons and other graphic-design elements. Character-oriented 2D animation may place more emphasis on posing, acting and performance.
The boundary isn鈥檛 absolute. A motion-graphics sequence can include animated characters, while a 2D production can include motion-graphics elements. It is usually more useful to consider what the movement is being used to communicate than to separate the two solely by software.
What is the Difference Between 2D and 3D Animation?
The main difference is how the visual material is constructed and controlled.

Is 2D Animation Easier Than 3D Animation?
There isn鈥檛 a universal easier option. Hand-drawn 2D can demand substantial control over drawing, posing and shape. Rigged 2D reduces some repeated drawing but introduces the preparation and manipulation of reusable assets.
3D gives animators models that can be posed and viewed from different angles while bringing its own spatial and technical demands. The difficulty moves to different parts of the work.
Is 2D Animation Still Used Today?
Yes. 2D animation remains part of film and television, games, advertising, educational work and digital media. Contemporary 2D isn鈥檛 limited to the historical paper-and-cel workflow. Digital production can support frame-by-frame drawing, reusable rigs, vector artwork and combinations of those techniques.
That range is one reason it is more useful to think of 2D animation as a broad category than as a synonym for traditional cartoons.
